Cost of Attendance
The annual cost of attendance, also referred to as the "student budget," represents the allowable costs for one academic year of study. These costs include tuition and fees; books, supplies, and equipment;Ìýand a reasonable living allowance for housing/rent, utilities, food, transportation, and miscellaneous personal expenses. The standard amount used by the medical school for living expenses is based on reasonable preferences and not on an individual's lifestyle and spending habits.

Dual Degree Programs (ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥/PHD, ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥/MBA)
Students enrolled in an ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥-PhD or ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥-MBA dual degree program complete degree requirements at WMed and Van Andel Institute Graduate School (PhD) or Western Michigan University (MBA). When taking courses at WMed, students register, pay tuition and other account charges, and receive financial aid (if eligible) from WMed. When taking courses at Van Andel Institute Graduate School or Western Michigan University, students register, pay tuition and other account charges, and receive financial aid (if eligible) from the respective institution. There may be terms/semesters when courses will be taken at both institutions. In that instance, students are required to register, and are responsible to pay all account charges, at each respective institution.
Tuition Discounts
Employees of the medical school may be eligible for tuition reimbursement of up to $5,250 each academic year. See policy HR74 Tuition Reimbursement for more information.
The spouse, qualified same sex domestic partner, and dependent children of full-time employed (0.80 FTE and greater) faculty (at the rank of Assistant Professor and higher) and staff of the medical school may be eligible for a 25% tuition remission benefit. See policy HR 76 Tuition Reimbursement for more information.
Tuition Refunds
WMed calculates the amount of tuition to be refunded to a student who stops attending classes,Ìý clerkships, or other academically related activity due to withdrawal (official or unofficial), dismissal, suspension, orÌý leave of absence (approved or unapproved).Ìý
A written request must be submitted and approved for a student to be eligible for a tuition refund. Doctor of Medicine (ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥) degree students must contact the associate dean of Student Affairs. Master of Science degree students must contact their Program Chief or the registrar. (Leave of absence requests apply to the Doctor of Medicine (ÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥) degree program only.)
WMed does not charge student fees that are subject to refund. All other unpaid student account charges must be paid in full before tuition is refunded. The charge for parking, if a student elected parking, is refunded on a pro-rated basis from the last date of attendance.

Tuition refunds are generally not granted after the deadlines but exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis when illness, death, involuntary call to military service, administrative error, or other exceptional circumstance exists.
A student who unofficially withdraws, takes an unapproved leave of absence, or is suspended or dismissed, is not entitled to a tuition refund.Ìý

Past Due AccountsÌý
Students are responsible for any unpaid balance on their account. Any past-due tuition balance may result in a hold being placed on a student'sÌýaccount and deregistration from current and future courses. Students who are sponsored by a third party provider (e.g. government agency, employer, Veterans Affairs Chapter 33 and Chapter 31 beneficiaries in accordance with Public Law 115-407) will not have a hold placed on their account or be deregistered from courses.Ìý

Enrollment statuses are reported to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) to confirm full time, half time, or less than half time enrollment, and to report changes due to withdrawal, leave of absence, dismissal or graduation. Personal identifiableÌýinformation for student loan borrowersÌýincluding program of study, anticipated graduation date, and contact information, is also reported. NSLDS records are accessible to all authorized NSLDS users including schools, lenders, loan servicers and guaranty agencies, federal agencies, and other authorized users.
